Argae by the River Severn

Argae by the River Severn

Date: 2003

Description: This meander in the River Severn, lies beneath the Breidden Hills and is actually in Wales. The straight bank in front of the river is a man made flood defence, called an argae. Argaes are designed to contain the flood water after the river bursts its banks. Two National Long Distance Foot paths, The Offa's Dyke Path and The Severn Way use the Argae or Levee as a convenient route. Photographed by John Tucker, Shropshire Wildlife Trust.
