Hay incline plane

Hay incline plane

Date: 2003

Description: The Hay incline plane was built by William Reynolds and opened in 1791. It consists of an incline rising from the lower canal up the hillside for a distance of some 60 meters. It was used to carry coal barges between the Shropshire Canal on the hillside down to a lower canal that ran through the China Works at Coalport and on to the River Severn. It is the best preserved of the Severn incline planes in Shropshire and is open to the public in the guardianship of the Ironbridge George Museum.
