Montgomery Canal, Llanymynech Wharf

Montgomery Canal, Llanymynech Wharf

Date: 2003

Description: The main purpose of the Montgomery Canal was to carry and distribute lime for agricultural purposes from the extensive lime quarries on Llanymynech Hill. During the height of extraction at Llanymynech some 35,000 tons of stone were loaded annually. This photograph shows Llanymynech Wharf as it looks today. It is difficult to imagine the bustle and activity that would have taken place here less than 200 years ago.
